Voiceovers – Travelling Freelancer

Developing your voice is a process which can take a few months. Initially most of us are far too critical on hearing our voice on playback, which usually happens listening to messaging systems. However, with a little effort and coaching almost anyone can develop good voice reel.

Great work if you can get it. I never tire of this work, if you are willing to put some time in to developing your voice/ Even if as a side gig, you will always be able to offer it alongside your main work, which for me is production and training in various aspects of classical and new media production.

For most of my career I worked in the U.S.A and Turkey in film, editing documentaries, Tv, a few feature films and commercials, but also producing a number of music videos and corporate films. Because of the ups and downs of economies, particularly in far off countries, I’ve found it necessary to have a few backups. For me that was recording English voiceovers for locally produced documentaries and corporate films, as well as teaching English to business and software companies, most recently through the Fluency Institute in Istanbul, but also online to Chinese younger learners. Becoming more involved in academics since returning to the UK, which I did primarily to write and earn an postgraduate degree, that sideline has developed into something of career training and assessing young media apprentices for A or T level certification under the UK’s in-work route to advanced accreditation (Ifate).

Developing your voice is normally a process which can take at least a few months. Initially most of us are overly critical on hearing our voice played back – for example on a phone messaging service.

However, we can nearly all develop strong voice skills. Below are examples of a few of the voice styles and tones I have been commissioned to record. They each target a different audience, market and demographic, in a variety of different marketing campaigns.

It mostly takes application plus a little feedback and coaching from someone who has experience in the area.

To start on your journey, book a couple of guided learning sessions, usually a few hours each. The first session offers you the process, theory and technology involved, culminating in an assigment. The second session, usually after a few weeks, is to review and give feedback on your voice presentation and recording work.

Rates for one-to-one online learning tutorials range between £35-£50 hourly.

My personal rates for voice work is between £200, for a short commercial, up to £2000 for a documentary or audio book read.
